Where it fits

Limits checked November 2026. Platforms change them now and then.

    Straight up, no catch

    Private by design

Your text is counted in your browser. It’s never sent to us or saved anywhere.

    Counts like the apps do

Links and emoji on X, curly quotes in a text message: the tricky counts are handled.

    Free, no account

No sign-up, no limit on length, no “upgrade to see more”.

    Nothing in the way

No pop-ups over your writing and nothing between you and the text box.

    Ads in their own box

Ads keep the site free. Every one is labelled, hatched and kept away from your writing.

    Good to know

    How are words counted?

The same way Microsoft Word counts them: anything between spaces that has a letter or number in it is one word, so “e-mail”, “don’t” and “2026” each count once. In Chinese and Japanese, each character counts as a word.

How is reading time worked out?

We use 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading non-fiction silently, from a 2019 review of nearly 200 reading studies. Speaking time uses 140 words a minute, a steady pace for a talk or presentation.

Why does X count my post differently?

X counts every link as 23 characters, however long it is, and most emoji as 2. The X row does the same, so it matches what X shows you. The other rows count each character, emoji included, as one.

Why did my text message split into parts?

A standard text holds 160 characters. Add an emoji or a curly quote (’ instead of ') and the whole message switches to a format that holds 70. Longer messages are sent in parts of 153 or 67 characters, and some plans charge for each part.

    Is my writing saved?

No. Everything is counted on your device. Nothing is sent to us, and your text is gone when you close the page.
