Good to know
What is Markdown?
A way of writing formatting as plain text: # Heading for a heading, - item for a list, **bold** for bold. It reads fine as it is, opens in any app, and it’s what AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude use when they write.
Why convert a document before giving it to an AI?
When you upload a PDF or Word file, the AI has to work through its layout too, and some tools read each PDF page as a picture as well as text. That uses up your allowance faster. Markdown is just the words and their structure, so the same content takes far fewer tokens, and you can see exactly what the AI will read.
The token count here is a rough guide (about four characters per token in English). Each AI counts a little differently.
Which files can it convert?
- Word (.docx): headings, lists, tables, links and footnotes
- PDF: headings, paragraphs, lists and links
- PowerPoint (.pptx): each slide, its tables and speaker notes
- Excel (.xlsx): each sheet as a table
- CSV and tab-separated text: one table
- Web pages (.html): the main content
Older .doc, .ppt and .xls files need saving in the newer format first. Pages, Keynote and Numbers can export to Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
How do I convert a Google Doc?
Open it, select everything (Ctrl+A, or ⌘A on a Mac), copy it and paste it into the Paste text tab. Or choose File > Download > Microsoft Word and drop that file in. Google Slides and Sheets download as PowerPoint and Excel the same way.
Why does my PDF need tidying?
A PDF only records where each word sits on the page, not what’s a heading or which words make up a table. Mono Mate works out the headings, paragraphs and lists from the size and position of the text, but tables and pages with several columns may come out as plain lines. If you have the Word or Excel original, convert that instead: its tables come through as real tables.
Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages with no text inside, so there’s nothing to pull out. Run those through a text-recognition (OCR) app first.
What happens to pictures and charts?
Markdown is text, so pictures, charts and drawings are left out. With “Mark where pictures were” ticked, you’ll see [Image: its description] in their place, using the alt text from your document if it has some.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The first time you convert a Word file, PDF or the like, your browser downloads the reader it needs from this site, then reads your file right there on your device. Your document is never sent to us or anyone else, and it’s gone when you close the page.
